God's Overflow
"For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks" – Luke 6:45

“Just Looking”

I worked in retail for many years. We were always taught to give the best customer service that we could possibly. After all, we were in the business of giving the guest hospitality that they would never forget. As you already know, one of the main ways we do so is by greeting the guest as soon as they walked through our doors.

Whenever we would ask, “is there anything you’re looking for today”, the most popular answer we get (and you give) is, “no thanks, I’m just looking.”

I know many Christians who are the exact same way. I see them sitting in the audience every single Sunday. Many times, they walk in late to church with their Starbucks in hand, they sit near the back of the auditorium, and as soon as the service is over, you see them walk right out the door.

Very often, when you engage them in conversation, you will hear things like, “we left our last church because we were offended by a word from the pastor” or “we didn’t like the worship music in this one church, so we decided to look at your church as a possible church home.”

You may very well be one of those Christians. You may be reading this as you’re doing research to find out which church you will visit next. You may be joining your third church this year. Or, you may really want to find a church home, but you’re not able to find exactly what you’re looking for.

Can I encourage you? Choose a church and stay planted. The bible is very clear. “Those who are planted in the house of God will flourish.” (Psalm 92:13). When you plant yourself in a church, it’s not just about GOING to church. It’s about serving the church just as much as it is about being under the word. When you plant yourself and you start serving, you will become a solid pillar in the house of God. You will obtain life-giving relationships. You will have the opportunity to change lives. You will be sowing into the lives of each and every person you come in contact with. This is the fruit that you will produce, and it all stemmed from the decision to plant yourself in one church.

Let’s make a decision today that choosing a church is not all about the worship music or the quality of preaching. Let’s decide to walk forward and believe that God’s word is true, that when we plant ourselves in the house of God, we will flourish.
