What Can You Do?

I came across a great writing from the Hillsong Church’s Blog, “Hillsong Collected”, and man, it really touched my heart.

So many times, when we think about the word “serving” or “servant”, we always feel that the service has to be an extremely grand expression that requires a lot of blood, sweat, and tears in order to show the love of Christ to a community or a group of people. Do we feel that, by breaking our backs, the intention of the service is any more powerful or meaningful to the people we are working with? Is it true that, the harder we work, the more meaningful the project ends up being?

No.

The article is a GREAT example of how even the smallest sentiments, coupled with the right intentions and heart, can be a very powerful example of Christ’s love that we can give back to a community.

The article – “Whatever is Needed”

It all started just before Easter last year. We made the call to Mona Vale Hospital to simply say “How can we help?”

You see, it’s one thing to have a church service on a Sunday morning in the community…it’s another thing altogether to be immersed in that community. The lifting of our hands on a Sunday must combine with the lifting of people’s hands and hearts every day.

The hospital asked: “What would you like to do?” Our response: “Whatever is needed”.

So… Last November a team of us went to the hospital to paint and clean.

Simple! You could see the surprise and delight on people’s faces as they walked past. We also presented the children’s ward with gifts and hampers from our ‘Stuff the Bus’ Christmas campaign. These gifts were given to the sick kids and their families on Christmas Eve. In their words, it was “generous.. beautiful.. and the kids loved it!”

Now its 2011 and the relationship between us and that local hospital continues to strengthen. There’s much more to do and we’re excited to simply keep doing “whatever is needed”.

Now, don’t get me wrong here. I’m not saying that we shouldn’t go out and do back breaking, sweat inducing volunteer work where it’s needed. All I’m saying is that even the smallest gesture of service can have a major impact on a community… in this case, a hospital. Painting, cleaning, giving hampers to children… simple!

What can you do to help your community or neighborhood that could have a significant impact for the Kingdom of God?

One Response to “What Can You Do?”

  1. Thats true. What seems to be a small act might actually be coming from a heart filled with LOVE. We love coz He first loved us. Our actions are actually fruits of God’s love seed sown in our hearts. It is so abundant that we can’t help but to let it overflow. So whatever it may be we choose to be a blessing coz we are so blessed 😀

    God’s Overflow of LOVE! (^^,)
