"For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks" – Luke 6:45

Your Mouth – Part 3

GRACE MAIL – CALVARY PHOENIX – 3/8/10

“Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment, so that it will give grace to those who hear.” Ephesians 4:29, NASB

“Unwholesome” means “rotten, corrupt, and worn out.” Jesus said that bad language comes from a heart that hasn’t been changed. He says that “out of the abundance of the heart, the mouth speaks.” Matthew 12:34b, NKJV

We’re all in the process of growing, so I’m not talking about the times you hit your thumb with the hammer. When those kinds of things happen and you have a knee-jerk reaction, those reactions will change as you get more and more mature in Christ. Right now, I’m speaking about what’s in your heart. You’re saved, you love Jesus, and that’s going to show in the way you talk! “Let no unwholesome word proceed from your mouth, but only such a word as is good for edification according to the need of the moment.”

This word “edification” contains the word “edifice.” An edifice is a building like the Washington Monument or the United States Capitol Building. Those are beautiful edifices and grand buildings. Well, to “build” someone up is to edify them. A word that builds someone up is called edification.

“What is needed right now? How can I build this person up right now?”

As believers, we need to begin to think like this!

TODAY’S PSALM:
Psalm 128, verses 1-2, “How joyful are those who fear the Lord—all who follow his ways! You will enjoy the fruit of your labor. How joyful and prosperous you will be!”

TODAY’S PROVERB
Proverbs 8, verses 5-7, “You simple people, use good judgment. You foolish people, show some understanding. Listen to me! For I have important things to tell you. Everything I say is right, for I speak the truth and detest every kind of deception.”
