God's Overflow
"For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks" – Luke 6:45

Grace Mail 1/29/10 – Proverbs 16:24

Words have such potential to help and heal people. I want you to think about this. In Proverbs 16:24, it says that our words can be so helpful!

“Pleasant words are a honeycomb, Sweet to the soul and healing to the bones.” Proverbs 16:24, NASB

In ancient days, they didn’t have Nestlé’s chocolate, Snickers bars, or Hershey’s kisses. They had honeycomb, and if you found one of those it was an amazing treat. It was a reward that parents gave their children because it was the “candy” of the day. Here the psalmist is saying that words are like a honeycomb! Don’t tell my daughter that, okay? She is a honey-addict. One of my daughters absolutely loves honey and puts honey on anything that is bread-like. Sometimes I say, “That’s a bit much of that honey – Honey!” She learned a Bible verse from the King James Version that says, “My son, eat thou honey for it is good.” She’ll quote that to me, so I get the Bible thrown in my face when I am trying to cut her honey intake down a little. Don’t show her this passage, okay?

If your blood sugar is sagging and you just need a quick pick-me-up, you can eat half of a Snickers and it will pick you up, won’t it? Well, words are like that. Have you ever had people around you who make you feel so good and lifted up when they talk to you? Then there are those other people who leave you feeling like you are shorter than when you walked into their presence.

Psalm 89, verses 5-7, “All heaven will praise your great wonders, Lord; myriads of angels will praise you for your faithfulness. For who in all of heaven can compare with the Lord? What mightiest angel is anything like the Lord? The highest angelic powers stand in awe of God. He is far more awesome than all who surround his throne.”

Proverbs 29, verses 1-2, “Whoever stubbornly refuses to accept criticism will suddenly be destroyed beyond recovery. When the godly are in authority, the people rejoice. But when the wicked are in power, they groan.”
