God's Overflow
"For out of the overflow of his heart his mouth speaks" – Luke 6:45

God Answers Prayer

“But the angel said to him, ‘Do not be afraid, Zacharias, for your prayer is heard; and your wife Elizabeth will bear you a son and shall call his name John.’” Luke 1:13

“And Zacharias said to the angel, ‘How shall I know this? For I am an old man, and my wife is well advanced in years.’” Luke 1:18

How many times has God promised us that He will do something for us that we’ve been praying for, but when the prayer was answered, we’re not sure that it was an authentic answer from God? In fact, we’re not even sure the answer is coming from God if it does line up with the answer we wanted.

Zacharias prayed for a long time that his wife, Elizabeth, who could not conceive a child, would be able to bear his child, but the promise was not answered immediately… by all accounts, it wasn’t answered for many years.

When the time came, and the angel Gabriel told Zacharias that his prayer has been answered, Zacharias doubted that the statement from Gabriel was real. Zacharias claimed that he and his wife were too old. Gabriel, by the power of the Lord, told Zacharias that his disbelief was troubling and that he was now going to be mute until the child was born.

What can we learn from this?
– God hears your prayers. You may want a more immediate answer, but God’s timing is perfect.
– We need to have faith that, no matter the timing, God is going to answer your prayer. We cannot determine the timing, but we have to wait patiently and continue in fervent prayer for our request. We also have to wait expectantly knowing that God will come through for us.
– When the prayer is answered, no matter the answer, we should continue on in belief that we have a God that has our best interest in His mind. If the prayer isn’t answered in the timing or the way that we want, we should not walk in disbelief.
– Most of all, we need to believe that God, when He answers our prayers, will give us the strength and grace to be able to complete the answered prayer no matter when He gives it to us. He would not give it to us if we couldn’t complete the task. We have to keep our eyes on Him and lean into Him for the guidance and strength to move forward.
