God's Overflow

Are You Listening?

Today’s Scripture

Asaph wrote in Psalm 81:13: “Oh, that my people would listen to me! Oh, that Israel would follow me, walking in my paths!”

In Isaiah 51 verse one, God speaks through the Prophet Isaiah and says this: “Listen to Me you who pursue righteousness, who seek the Lord.” NASB Again, in the same chapter, He says, “Listen to Me, you who know righteousness, a people in whose heart is My law.” (Verse 7)

God says, “Listen to Me! Listen!” Listening to the Lord through His Word can save you a whole lot of hurt, and it can bless you in ways you could never have dreamed of. Listening to the Lord can take you places you never thought you could go.

A few years ago, Time Magazine shared Erik Weihenmayer’s amazing achievement that he accomplished on May 25, 2001. Erik climbed Mount Everest. That’s cool, Mark, but lots of people have done that! Yes, but not people like Erik. You see, Erik is blind. Erik became blind when he was thirteen years old because he had a degenerative eye disease that caused complete blindness; and yet he made it to the top of the summit of Mount Everest. It was amazing how he did it! Ninety percent of the climbers who try this never make it to the top of Mount Everest, and 165 people have died trying since 1953. Erik succeeded, for a large part, because he listened well. He would listen to a little bell that was tied to the back of the climber in front of him so he would know which direction to go. He listened also to the voices of teammates who would shout back to him, “Death fall two feet to your right!” so he would know where not to go. Death fall? I can’t imagine hearing that — out in a parking lot with my eyes wide open to see, much less blind on Mount Everest!

He listened well. He would listen to the sound of his pick hitting the ice and the snow. By the sound of it, he could tell whether the snow was safe to walk on. With a bell, the voices of his teammates, and the sound of his pick, he got to the top of Mount Everest by listening well.

In this perilous journey of life, listening well can make all the difference. Are you learning to be quick to listen to God and His Word? When you’re in the Word, sometimes you’ll hear a little bell saying, “This is for you.” Sometimes, it’s the sound of a huge chime – DONG! DONG! DONG! – DEATH FALL TO THE RIGHT! Listen to the Word, and it will save you many a fall and many a pain. We want to be quick to hear the Word of God.

Today’s Psalm:
Psalm 74, verse 22a, “Arise, O God, and defend your cause…”

Today’s Proverb:
Proverbs 14, verse 7, “Stay away from fools, for you won’t find knowledge on their lips.”
